The 16th European Forum on Eco-innovation will be held in Hannover, Germany, on 7 and 8 April 2014. The Forum will examine enabling factors and challenges of transitioning to a circular economy model in an urban context. These will be presented through the lens of the stakeholders: city authorities, citizens and businesses. The event will also identify and showcase eco-innovations that can facilitate the shift to a circular economy and support cities in meeting the new targets for municipal waste treatment. It will take place during the world’s leading trade fair for industrial technology, Hannover Messe (which will be held from 7 to 11 April 2014), and will be linked to the Metropolitan Solutions and IndustrialGreenTec fairs. It will include free access to the Hannover Messe and walking tours under different topics.

Each year, in the European Union alone, we throw away three billion tonnes of waste. Valuable amounts of usable commodities are lost, as only a small share of them is traded on second-hand markets or recycled. To avoid this waste of resources, energy and human labour, a smart approach to integrated infrastructures inspired by the principles of circular economy offers several advantages. At the same time, and to comply with the revised European legislation on waste foreseen in the spring of 2014, further efforts by local authorities are needed to improve their waste management systems. Eco-innovative solutions can provide some of the answers to these challenges.

Organised by DG Environment in the context of the Eco-innovation Action Plan, the biannual European Forum on Eco-innovation brings together around 200 specialists from the worlds of research, industry, policy, finance, civil society and business. Over two days, participants present the latest developments in their fields and engage in discussions on a specific theme.
